Ambicare
Ambulight PDT
Challenge:
To develop Ambicare’s specialist intellectual property into the world’s first portable and disposable photodynamic therapy (PDT) device for skin cancer treatment. The product needed to address the challenges of moving treatment from a central hospital environment to the local doctor’s clinic or potentially the home.
Solution:
- Unique, patent pending, single-use light emitting plaster design that is easy to apply and is both comfortable and convenient for the patient
- Designed for high volume manufacture it incorporates assembly snap-fit & push fit features
- All the innovation, design development and production work undertaken in the UK
- Replaces large floor standing light sources
- Wearable low powered light source technology allows patient greater freedom of movement during treatment
Results:
Prototype devices have been used in a pilot clinical trial at the internationally renowned Photobiology Unit of Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, Scotland. This was published in the British Journal of Dermatology in June 2009. Following the official unveiling of the Ambulight PDT at the annual congress 'Euro-PDT' the Ambulight PDT has won the Plastics Industry Industrial design award 2009 and received extensive news coverage.
