Orthopaedic Surgical Navigation
Challenge:
Acrobot provides precision surgical systems for computer-assisted surgeon-controlled robotic surgery. For their Navigator instrument, Acrobot required a mobile, manoeuvrable instrument to house a display, precision navigation arms plus computing and power supply components for use in busy orthopaedic operating theatre environments.
Solution:
Working closely with the Acrobot engineering team, KD provided industrial and mechanical design for the instrument housing, and also delivered the first 12 pre-production units for test, demonstration and clinical trials.
Results:
The new systems complement the skills of orthopaedic surgeons by improving speed, accuracy and reproducibility. When joint replacement components are implanted accurately and successfully, the patient’s post-operative recovery time can be reduced and discomfort and complications can be minimised, which should then lead to improved quality of life for the patient.
