Sookmyung University comes to Kinneir Dufort
In January 2016 Kinneir Dufort hosted a group of BA Industrial design students from Sookmyung University in Korea.
A few months before, my professor had contacted me and asked if I could organise a design studio visit for his students.
It was a part of his students’ winter field trip to the UK in order to explore the Design industry outside of Korea and share with the rest of the students in University. They chose the UK, recognised for its volume of creative output, including its innovation-driven economy, educational excellence and attractive markets for creative investment.
It is rare to see design consultancies in Korea equipped with all the expertise areas Kinneir Dufort have as an agency, crucial to delivering a holistic design process
Eight students arrived in Bristol on 22nd of January, having already visited the University of the Arts and the Royal College of Art in London.
First of all, they were introduced to KD’s history and expertise areas by Managing Director, Jim Orkney. They then had a tour of our world class prototyping facilities with Colin Alden, Head of Prototyping; demonstrating how our designers’ visions arrive into their hands through cutting edge prototyping technologies. Afterwards, we went through some projects that we have been working on and the session wrapped up with discussion from James Eelbeck (Innovation Consultant) and Sarah Dickins (Industrial Designer) regarding ways of working at KD and how they translated their degree skills into design consultancy after graduation.
Students were impressed by how individuals integrated their skills with their colleagues including research, design, engineering and model making amongst others. It is rare to see design consultancies in Korea equipped with all the expertise areas Kinneir Dufort have as an agency, crucial to delivering a holistic design process and achieving sucessful outcomes for clients. Also, they found it a desirable place to work due to the fantastic facilities on offer.
It was very pleasant to see that my alumni students appreciated their experience at KD and it gave them a rare opportunity to see an example of a top Global Design Consultancy whilst still being at University. Moreover, I was happy to be a part of the event which will be published in detail and shared with the rest of the students at Sookmyung University.
I believe this was a fantastic opportunity for the students to learn abroad, but also for KD to learn more about different cultures and expand our relationship with the future Korean design market. We look forward to seeing what these young designers will do following graduation and wish them the best of luck.
