Empowering Bristol’s future creators
In leading a second youth Spotlight Session with Babbasa, our team set out to share their career journeys and learnings with some of the South West’s future creators.
Babbasa work to empower young people through career opportunities. Focusing predominantly on ethnically diverse and less advantaged communities, the social enterprise propels individuals aged 16 – 25 to move with confidence into work, education, and business, with structured support, mentorship programmes and workshops.
With the help of experts in creative fields, young people have the chance to learn the facts, and guide their futures in a more definite direction. Babassa’s Spotlight Sessions are a great host for this and provide a valuable, up close experience.
KD’s Medical Portfolio Manager, Sunny Panesar, and Product and Packaging Designer, Olly Needham, led the evening, each demonstrating the varied, exciting journey of working within the design industry. In shining a light on the paths they each took, and what key drivers it took to get there, persistence, drive and tenacity were shown to be key. As well as having the confidence to make connections and viewing rejection as a tool to learn from.
It was fundamental for our team to hero the benefits of diversity within the industry and relay this message to the students. The design industry generally lacks the multicultural facets that would benefit it, yet as a design consultancy it is fundamental that we reflect the people that we’re designing for and encourage more ethnically diverse individuals to enter the world of design.
The response from both the students and parents attending was extremely promising and demonstrated clearly that sharing our career, and life, experiences can be incredibly beneficial in creating direction in a young person’s life.
